STUART PORTRAIT OF WASHINGTON IS UP FOR AUCTION
Another historic treasure is going to be auctioned soon. It's a painting of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart that until recently hung unrecognized (as an original) in the Rochester, New York, home of a descendant of John Jacob Astor, America's first millionaire. The painting will be auctioned March 27 by Cottone Auctions in Geneseo, New York.

This is very interesting. I wonder, having seen this portrait, if perhaps it might be more important, because it is finished, than the similar, but unfinished, portraits of George and Martha Washington (the Boston Athenaeum portraits) that are owned jointly by the Athenaeum and the National Portrait Gallery.
I actually have a small picture just like this in a leather frame. I was told many years ago it was valuable. How do I find out if it is or not
I wish that someone with more money than I have would purchase the painting and give it to the National Gallery of Art or to the White House. It should be available for the US public to enjoy. It is after all a national treasure.
A friend has 2 portrait type pictures that have fascinated me for some time because if you turn the image over, the same "basic" image is on the reverse. She recently sent these home with me to attempt to research; and I have been thinking possibly they are crayon portraits. What I do know is one image is the SAME AS THIS ONE!!! The other image she has appears to have been done by the same artist. It is of Martha Washington.
My question now is, where do we go from here?
