STICKY SITUATION

Be careful when using Scotch tape, duct tape, adhesive tape or sticky labels. The adhesive can discolor paper long after the tape is removed. It can take off some of the thin sheet of silver used over copper on old Sheffield plate, it can discolor or remove over-glaze colors (especially gold) on ceramics, and it can leave a discoloration on metal patina. It can even tear off a loose piece of veneer on furniture.

In response to your sticky situations, I have encountered this problem many times when buying items at thrift stores and the good will stores. Employees put the stickers right on the fronts of books and on painted items instead of finding an inconspicuous (sp) place that won't harm the item. I can't tell you how many times I have tried to remove a sticker and pulled the paint right off of an item. Everyone should speak to the managers of the stores they frequent. It is really a problem.

I do not like the practice of some thrift stores of taping lids onto bottoms as when I go to remove tape, the design or flashing come off the glassware! I had purchased a 40-50's covered casserole one time at a large chain thrift store that had the retro starburst gold design on lid, and when I started removing tape, the stars were coming off with it! I still have it with the tape on. The other thing they do that annoys me is that they staple price tags onto the clothing, and if you are not very careful in removing them, you will leave a couple of little holes in fabric!

When using sticky labels to mark inventory, I put the label on a post-it-note, trim the post it and place the post-it-note on the inventory. When removed, no sticky mess or damage to the inventory.

Sticky labels and tape if left long enough on textiles can also leave a yellow stain that is impossible to get out.

Stickers and tape left on textiles for long periods of time will leave a yellow spot that is impossible to remove.

Congratulations!!! what a pleasure to receive your Komments.
re: sticky situations: we lived in Saudi Arabia in the 80s. When the packers came for our move back to the US, I couldn't watch everywhere. They used packing tape to wrap a beautiful wooden Kuwaiti spice cabinet. The tape took the finish off and stripes remain as a reminder to be vigilant. I once had movers ask if I wanted "these old rugs" thrown out in the alley. They were wonderful Middle Eastern prayer rugs. I caught that one!

Thank you so much for posting this comment!! I have a real problem with my cousin-in-law who seems to have a tape festish everytime he repairs or attempts to repair ANYTHING. I have come unglued on him numerous times for putting tape on my stuff after he glues it and most of the time it is something made of wood. The most recent item he TRIED to put tape on was an antique Hall Table that belonged to my Great-Grandparents and luckily I wasn't taking my eyes off him. I told him he was FIRED from repairing any of my antiques ever again. You can bet that he will be reading this blog next time I see him!!
