MEASUREMENTS

Need to check the measurements of a great find at a flea market? We have said for many years that a dollar bill is a good 6-inch ruler.

Martha Stewart Living magazine adds these suggestions: a man's size 10 1/2 shoe is about a foot long. A woman's size 8 shoe is about 10 inches long.

For just a very few dollars you can buy a 1 inch square tape measure that is 36" long at a hardware store. It is not too big for pocket and purse and much easier that putting dollar bills end to end on an item!

My husband always measured things with his size 12 shoe and figured it was almost 12 inches. I disagreed with the Martha Stewart article about a size 10 1/2 being about a foot long. I googled this and a size 12 shoe is 11.31 inches and a 10 1/2 shoe is 10.81 inches.

I know the measurements of my fingers, my middle finger to the end of my palm, my elbow, and shoulder.
A quarter is just a bit under an inch measured across, and it's helpful to know a dollar bill is
2 l/2" and just a tad over 6" across
Do agree, it's much easier just to always carry that small tape measure.

Measure the width of you handspan with your fingers spread wide. Most people have an 8" to 10" span. You'll always have it with you.

Need to know if those pants will fit? Zip them and button them then wrap the waist of the pants around your neck. If the ends overlap, they'll be too big, if they don't come close to each other, they're too small. If the two ends meet comfortably the pants will fit in the waist just fine.

Measure your handspan, tip of thumb to tip of little finger. Mine is 8", nice multiple # and always at my finger tips.
