Q: I have a set of dishes that was stored at a duck hunting club for many years. Can you tell me anything about the pattern and when it was made?A: Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin, two brothers, began making pottery in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1871. The pottery became Ohio Valley Pottery in 1874. Later it became Homer Laughlin China Company. In 1897 William Edwin Wells and Louis I. Aaron became the owners of the pottery. Members of their families still operate the company. The headquarters moved to Newell, West Virginia, in 1907. Homer Laughlin China Company is one of the most prolific producers of dinnerware in the United States. The company estimates that between 25,000 and 30,000 different patterns have been made. The peacock mark was used on the Wells shape and on some Century, Jade and Orleans shape dishes from 1930 to the 1940s. Your dishes are Century shape, which was made from 1931 to c.1951. The pattern is Briar Rose. Many Homer Laughlin dishes were sold in Montgomery Ward catalogs in the 1930s.

For your information, the Wells Family bought out the Aarons most other owners of Homer Laughlin a few years back.
My maiden name is Laughlin--by the way it is pronounced like locklin--not with an f sound. Our family is from the Altoona, Pa area and I have been told since childhood we were related to Homer. I have several pieces of china from Homer, but not any complete set. I tend to buy them at yard sales and antique stores and cherrish every one of them.
OK, but what is a full set of dishes worth?
I have some dishes with the same Century shape & the Wells peacock, but they are a different pattern. A little more deco, which I think is more fitting for the shape, actually. Does anyone know what they would be worth? I have plates, bread & butter plates & saucers or salad plates, if I remember right. I'd have to dig them out. I think I will do that.
I have the same plates but there is no mark on them.Same pattern, same color. Would they be Homer Laughlin or did someone else copy them?

I have a Homer Laughlin plate with j 30 N on the back. The front has small pink roses and blue flower diamond-shaped inserts. It has a gold rim around the outside.
Does anyone know the pattern name or number?

I have a Homer Laughlin platter with J 49 N 6 on the back. It is a floral pattern with gold trim. The platter is in good condition with no cracks or chips. Can someone please tell me what it's worth?
