TIP FROM A READER

"To move a heavy piece of furniture, put the legs on a throw rug or blanket and pull the blanket." I tried this and it works well if the furniture is not "tippy." You may need help getting the rug under the legs to start with. It is often a two-person job.

Ha! I do the exact same thing and am able to move things myself quite often. I use a throw rug with a rubber backing (upside down) and the backing helps hang on to the piece you're moving. Just be sure to shake the rug first to make sure there is nothing stuck in the pile of the rug that can scratch your floor when you move your furniture.

Check out "sliders" from Bed Bath and Beyond. They are a slippery kind of plastic discs with rubber on the top to cling to the bottom of the piece your moving. Easy to slip them under the corners of a heavy piece and you can practically move it with one hand.
The original ones were called "Magic Sliders". And they are!!

I have a better way of moving heavy furniture. I am 78; 5'tall; 120lbs and have been moving heavy furniture for years; e.g. glass display cases, sofas, etc. And, yes, it doesn't take much effort. I use two wooden closet rods slightly wider that the width of the item. I place one rod under the front of the furniture and roll. When the rod reaches near the end of the item, I put the second rod in front and continue to do this until I put the item down. By using rods, you can manuver thru doorways, twist and turn the item until you have it in place. Works everytime and saves carpets and linoleum from damage.

While in the Air Force almost 50 years ago we frequently had to move heavy desks and file cabinets. We used a straw broom, or brooms, underneath. The straw glided easily across all types of floors, even concrete. We just pulled the broom handles while balancing the item on top.
