20TH-CENTURY HAMMERED ALUMINUM

The best 20th-century hammered aluminum pieces have plain, smooth backs. The hammered design does not show through as it does on less expensive pieces.

i must take exception to this comment. having collected "hammered" aluminum for over 20 years, i have found that some of the earliest pieces have considerable hammer marks on the reverse showing the skill of the maker in forcing the "soft" aluminum into pattern carved into the steel die. perhaps the reference is about the pattern which should be only on one side unliked "pressed" pieces generally from post WWII. charlie

There is a hieirarchy of makers names. The top is these: Wendell August forge, Arthur Armour, DePonceau. Very good are: Rodney Kent, Continental, World Hand Forged, Hand Forged, Cromwell, Everlast, Buenilum.

Not so good are from Italy and Spain and some other brands like Designed and Forman.

The real thing to look for is pitting on either side. That can not be fixed easily.
