Strawberry Shortcake Gets a Makeover

Strawberry Shortcake, who moved to Hasbro from American Greetings this month, is a doll from the 1980s. She and her other fruit-scented friends have been given total makeovers. Strawberry has had a facelift, lip plumping, freckle removal, and a nose job. She also has longer hair, a dye job, green eyes (they used to be brown) and a new wardrobe from Juicy Couture. Will collectors think she is the same doll? Will she and her friends remain popular?

They should call her Strawberry cheesecake not shortcake. Kim

Why would anyone trade a cat for a cell phone?

I was a little girl when the original Strawberry Shortcake came out and owned the exact one pictured. I loved playing with her and her little cat and especially loved smelling them! I even had Strawberry Shortcake sheets for my bed and still have a pillow case left over. Too bad about the new 2008 look. All the character has been taken out of her.

Does the new Strawberry shortcake or her friends smell? I remember how much fun it was to collect the old ones and to smell the strawberry, peach and blueberry ect.. from each doll. The older style is more appealling -especially for the 3-8 year olds that it should be marketed too It's hard to say how the new one will sell. It looks too much like a strange little sister of Barbie with red hair.

Strawberry Shortcake and the other characters were unique and adorable as they were. Now she looks like a bad imitation of "Bratz". There is an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" They should have left her alone!!

I am a child of the 1940's, but I have an original Strawberry Shortcake I delight in. Maybe a child of the 21st Century will someday want to collect these new ones. I sure don't. I don't find her attractive at all.

Ick to the new Strizawbizerry Shizortkizake! I love the Old School one forever!!! She was so wholesome and sweet! I still sing a few of the songs from her videos! "Smile a sunny mornin'! ....

I had a whole collection of S.Shortcake dolls of the 80's. These new ones should not be called by the same name. I miss my old dolls, and {SNIFF---ahhhhhhh} that wonderful smell they had. I don't think these newer dolls will ever be as popular. JMHO

This change has RUINED her. Not to mention that she is clothed in Juicy Couture? How ridiculous that we allow this as a public. It is just another way for the fashion industry to get their merchandise in kids head and on their want list as early as possible. That is so ridiculous, and I will never buy this doll.

This was a makeover we didn't need. Love the "old" style - much more "hug appeal"!

Hello all, I think they should have left Strawberry Shortcake alone, how can you do that to such a cute doll. And to think of all the pain she went through .....

The major rehaul of Strawberry Shortcake's image is a reflection of how the entertainment industry thinks the ideal woman should look. Unrealistically tall, skinny, and vibrant.

The old Strawberry looks like someone that could be your little sister. Cute, freckly, innocent.

The new Strawberry is now taller and more shapely. Her dress has turned into a mini skirt. Her hair long, silky, and luscious.

The innocence and fun of the old Strawberry seems to be entirely lacking with the new version.

What 'made' Strawberry Shortcake, Strawberry Shortcake is now gone.

It brings the word "plastic" to a whole new level.

It's sad to see the emphasis that marketing agencies are putting on the female figure, and how they should dress.

I would definitely not give the new Strawberry Shortcake to a little 5-year-old girl. Toys like these can really make a psychological impact on the way they feel about themselves.

Just another case of trashed tradition! Why TRY to "improve" on a sweet, cute doll! Bah humbug to the new Strawberry Shortcake....children need to have innocent toys.

The new Strawberry Shortcake...how tacky! As classy a collectible as Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson junk. Sorry you wasted your time memorializing it. Junk, junk, junk. I notice even the old Strawberry is worth nothing in a global market such as eBay. We neophytes hope to learn about REAL collectibles from you!!

Good Grief, can't the marketing people leave anything alone. I will not add the new Strawberry Shortcake Doll to my collection. Can't young girls be young girls? I also would not give this to a child.Boo to Hasboro!

Yes, I too had all the original stuff back in the day...
I LOVED Strawberry Shortcake SO much that I LOVED seeing her even in the new fashion. No she is not the same, but I am not either. But there is enough of a resemblance that I seem to have bought everything on the market in the new pattern (bed set, lunch box, and DVDs that smell like strawberries too) for my two year old. The biggest difference is that I have to close my eyes when I take a sniff! :)

Everyone should boycott the new one. The poster above should have bought her 2 year old the old one.

Why get rid of the freckles and plump her lips? Disgusting.

How sad. I loved the one pictured from 1980. I now have a daughter who has red hair, but I will not be purchasing the "new" version. I think it's horrible that all these dolls are so sexed up. No wonder girls have so many body image issues these days.

Thumbs DOWN to the new Strawberry Shortcake! If the new owners wanted to promote a 'hooker' image they should have bought the license from another icon. How 'bout Linda Lovelacecake? Take a lesson from Coca Cola, boys, don't mess with the Classic, it will blow up in your face and then cost you millions to retool to correct your blunder. Huronhusker in Nebraska
