WHAT'S IN AND WHAT'S OUT

ScheierI went to dinner last weekend with Wes Cowan (of Cowan's Auctions and PBS's History Detectives). We swapped stories about what is in and out. Haviland dinner sets are out, selling for about $200 to $300 now. Ten years ago, they would have cost $800. Pink roses are not what 30-year-olds want, and gold trim makes a trip to the dishwasher or the microwave dangerous for the dishes. Cut glass is down in price, too. A $250 bowl bought 10 years ago is now only $100 to $150. The $1,000 market is moribund; many things are not selling. However, the top 15 percent of the market (determined by price) is in great shape and prices are going up. Wes has planned a fall auction of studio pottery and we have a new report coming out on studio pottery--so studio pottery may be next on the shopping list for pottery lovers. You can find great pieces with unique design and lower prices than for comparable art pottery.

The top 15% of the market is up because the people who looted the economy got to keep the money. No one is looking to fill in grandma's china set, however, if he or she is worried about paying the mortgage. The very rich continue to do well and the very expensive continues to sell well. Oh, well.

Yes...I too would like to know what dinner sets are "in" now.
Also when a reader asks a question about an item and does not ask the value of the item would you please include it anyway?
Please do this in your newspaper columns also...it's interesting and valuable information to your readers.
Thank you

I'm so glad you commented on the latest trends. I would really like to know more about the current trends in the market and any thoughts of the future of antiques and collectibles. It amazes me what some antiques sell for now compared to 20 years ago. Anytime your looking for a topic I would love a full article on this subject.

I've seen alot of the Franciscan sets of the 1950's sell lately. Especially the solid colors. Turquoise and white seem to go fast.
