ROYAL DOULTON PROTOTYPE JUG TOPS $10,000

Royal Doulton Prototype Jug Tops $10,000One-of-a-kind pieces don't always bring high prices, but those by well known companies or artists excite auction goers. If the piece is by a company that makes a series of collectibles, like Royal Doulton character jugs, there are many bidders. The two-sided jug showing Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee with a Washington Monument handle was produced in 1983. A few prototypes were made, but the jug never went into full production. In March one of the prototypes sold for $10,440 at Bonhams in London. The final-production two-faced jug (it has a pair of flags for the handle) sells for about $350.

The 2-faced jugs, perportedly with the faces of Lee and Grant, leave me cold. The two faces look more like each other than like the men they represent.

I am very curious and hope someone can answer this. HOW DO THESE PROTOTYPES GET OUT THERE TO THE AUCTION MARKET. SHOULDN'T THEY BE KEPT BY THE COMPANY PRODUCING THEM? are they stolen by some employee or what?? just curious. thank you

I have a figurine(Occupied Japan) that is an identical match to Royal Doulton's "Old Balloon Seller". Does anyone know if the OC figurine came first or did the Royal Doulton come first. Thanks.
